{"id":2282,"date":"2022-09-01T09:39:23","date_gmt":"2022-09-01T17:39:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/m9dev2.com\/donforman\/?p=2282"},"modified":"2022-09-01T09:39:25","modified_gmt":"2022-09-01T17:39:25","slug":"behind-the-squad-slyvia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/m9dev2.com\/donforman\/behind-the-squad-slyvia\/","title":{"rendered":"Behind the Squad: Slyvia\u2019s Strength"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Faith, family, and a fighting spirit \u2013 These are the pillars that allowed Slyvia Griffin to preserve even through the toughest of times.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Slyvia, a local Las Vegas grandmother and veteran, had her life forever altered in 2016.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She had been working the night shift at her job, as she normally did, but the next thing she remembered, she was waking up in the hospital struggling to stay conscious. The doctor came back and delivered the news: she had suffered a heart attack.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tragedy struck soon after, again. While receiving heart attack treatment in the hospital, she was administered a medication that caused an allergic reaction \u2013 one with devasting effects.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI ended up losing my legs and fingers,\u201d said Slyvia.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Throughout her entire healing process, her husband, Lamont, was by her side. \u201cIt\u2019s very scary to have your best friend [go through that],\u201d he said tearfully. \u201cYou can\u2019t do anything to help her out but be there for her.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Slyvia\u2019s fighting spirit never flickered, though. During recovery, she worked with a prosthetist to relearn how to walk. \u201cI learned how to take a couple of steps,\u201d she said. \u201cBut, maybe a week later, both my legs went paralyzed. That took away earning how to walk on prosthetics.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Though her situation looked bleak at times, Slyvia never gave up.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s now been years since the incident that left her paralyzed, but Slyvia\u2019s health condition requires consistent care and doctor\u2019s appointments. For her family, this posed no problem until they started to have car troubles that were jeopardizing Sylvia\u2019s health.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s when Lamont decided to share Slyvia\u2019s journey with the Surprise Squad.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When her story reached Don Forman, owner of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unitednissan.com\">United Nissan<\/a>, he felt touched by her resilience and knew he needed to do something for her.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cShe was the most positive person in the world,\u201d said Forman. \u201cIt makes you sit back and appreciate the beauty of life more.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the day of the surprise, Forman has the opportunity of handing Slyvia her gift.&nbsp; Inside the small red box was a $5000 check.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut there\u2019s more,\u201d Forman told Slyvia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Along with the check, he informed her that United Nissan would pay off her $3,000 Title Loan, as well as repair her van.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cShe did make me cry, she was amazing,\u201d said Forman. \u201cAnd what a support staff her husband is. Health issues take a lot of effort, and he does it with a smile and attitude of gratitude.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The FOX5 Surprise Squad has been sharing random acts of kindness with the Las Vegas community since 2013.
